While on residency and teaching at the IUAV University in Italy in 2008, Flávia Müller Medeiros made a drawing in her sketch book after a discussion about Berlusconi. As Flávia explains, ‘I found out that the Berlusconi’s press office wanted to paint over a pair of tits on the painting “The Truth Unveiled by Time” by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo that hung in his press office. Every time Berlusconi spoke in a press conference the tits were pictured just behind him, which they said could harm his reputation.’

After returning to London, Flávia ‘asked people to quickly draw a pair of tits on a white piece of paper.’ Catching them off guard, she began by asking visitors to her studio if they could make a drawing. The process became an intimate ritual and sparked interesting and strange discussions. People reacted to the project differently, some refused to make the drawing, others felt it difficult to quickly translate the request into a drawing: should they look idealistic, real, a doodle or abstract? All drawings are made using the same pen on standard A3 copy paper, floating within the white space of the paper.

Flávia Müller Medeiros was born 1971 in Rio de Janeiro. She lives and works in London, UK where she gained her MA in Fine Art (2003) at Goldsmiths College.
